Vice President, Group Benefits
Sometimes life takes you on a track that you never expected or planned, but you end up where you need to be.
As Debbie tells it, she fell into insurance when her intent was to become a schoolteacher. She discovered the importance of insurance while working as a claims administrator for Sun Life and Manulife. She then had the good fortune to meet Jim Dehoney and thought, with teaching still in her plans, “Now this is a man I could work with” because he “truly cares about his customers and their employees.”
The same impulse that hinted at a possible teaching career - caring, mentoring and the satisfaction of seeing people succeed - she recognized in the relatively new Dehoney Financial Group.
One of Dehoney Financial Group’s longest serving team members, Deb is the company’s Vice President of Group Benefits, a position she has held since 2007. She supports and mentors the account management team, reviews documentation, and helps in problem resolution.
Deb’s background includes management with Sun Life and Manulife, and numerous certifications from: LOMA (Life Office Management Association), HIAA (Health Insurance Association of America) and ICA (International Claims Association). She also earned an ALHC (Associate in Life and Health Claims) designation with distinction.
Her pre-DFG work experience taught her the value of group life and health benefits, but DFG really brought it home with its genuine concern for people. ”I love being at work. I am very proud to be on the DFG team. We have put together a wonderful team of people who we consider our work family.”
Deb was born and raised in Montreal, one of five sisters and a brother. A transfer to the Vancouver Sun Life claims office allowed Deb and husband Jack to rejoin her family, who had already relocated to the Lower Mainland. They are the proud parents of three grown children and keep themselves busy in their Coquitlam home.
Deb says she is forever thankful that she followed her heart.
